Cattle Branding:
A Rancher's Signature
A Rancher's Signature
October 9, 2003 - December 31, 2003
A new exhibit entitled Cattle Branding: A Rancher's Signature will open on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at the Merced County Courthouse Museum. The first recorded cattle brand was used in California in 1769. The first recorded cattle brand in Merced County was registered in 1855. Each brand tells its own story. When they come together, they present a pictorial history of cattle ranching in Merced County from the Miller & Lux cattle enterprise on the West Side to Crocker-Huffman's cattle operation in Eastern Merced County. An opening reception of the exhibit is scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2003 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. It will feature branding activities by the Merced-Mariposa Cattlemen's Association, a presentation of the history of barbed wire fences by Charles Sawyer, and a reading of cowboy poetry by Pat Richardson. During the reception, there will be a drawing for a free door prize, lunch for two at the Branding Iron Restaurant. The exhibit will run through December 31, 2003.
