Midcentury Merced: A Merced Sun-Star Memory
Thursday, November 18, 2010
Merced County Courthouse Museum will open a new exhibit entitled, Midcentury Merced: A Merced Sun-Star Memory, on November 18. This exhibit is a joint project of the Courthouse Museum and Merced Sun-Star. It features Merced Sun-Star photos from the 1950s and 60s and Assessor's photos from 1959 and offers a glimpse of Merced in the post-World War II era. From Castle Air Force Base, the flood of the 1950s, the revamp of 16th Street, to the building of El Capitan High School, the construction of Highway 99 as well as the destruction of Merced's Chinatown, the midcentury changes in Merced are documented in these photographs. Merced native Mike Bik has compiled a selection of these photos in his book entitled, Bik's Picks: Midcentury Merced Revisited. Published by the Merced County Historical Society, it will be released and available for sale for $12.95 at the exhibit opening. An old "G" Street sign will be given away as the door prize
